2020 is giving us 13 full Moons, two of which are Supermoons. Usually we only have one Full Moon per month bringing the total to 12 but October is providing us with an extra one - a rare Blue Moon on Halloween!
What is a Blue Moon?
For almost a century, whenever two full Moons appear in a single month the second full Moon is named a “Blue Moon.” This isn’t that unusual + usually occurs every 2 - 3 years. However a full Moon on Halloween is pretty rare, happening roughly once every 19 years which is a pattern known as the Metonic Cycle. Unfortunately, the moon won’t actually look blue however beautiful that would look!
Some think the name comes from a mispronunciation of the word 'belewe' which means 'to betray' + was named so because moon studiers were 'betrayed' by the fact the moon did not stick to its one full moon a month pattern.
We encourage everyone to take notice of this Blue Moon as it’ll be the last full moon to fall on Halloween until 2039!
Our celebration of the Halloween Blue Moon
