We’re so thrilled that there’s more of a mainstream conversation happening around vegan products, beauty products in particular. We recently spoke about the rise of ethical consumerism + the subsequent shift towards vegan friendly products + that has meant more people are starting to dig a little deeper into the products they’re using.
But we’ve noticed there still seems to be a little bit of confusion surrounding the terms vegan + cruelty-free. Many people (+ some brands!) seem to think the two are interchangeable but they’re actually two entirely different things.
We’re all about consumers having as much information as possible about the products they’re buying + of course, it’s so important that the information you have is accurate.
With that in mind we’re going to give you a clear explanation of what the two terms mean so you can stay empowered whilst shopping!
What does vegan mean on a product label?
If something is labelled ‘vegan’ then it means that the product contains no animal products or animal derivatives such as gelatin, honey, beeswax or collagen.
What does cruelty-free mean on a product label?
If something is labelled ‘cruelty-free’, it means that neither the product nor the ingredients or components have been tested on animals.
So far so simple!
However, just because a product is cruelty-free does not mean it’s vegan + vice versa. So buying a vegan product means it could have been tested on animals + cruelty-free products may contain animal derivatives. Which is why there can be some confusion around the terms.
If you want to be 100% certain that absolutely no animals were harmed to make your beauty products, look for those that are both vegan + cruelty-free.
Vegan + cruelty-free shampoo + conditioner
Because we believe that as custodians of the planet, we must do all we can to take good care of it, while also nurturing our own wellbeing, it was important to us to create a range of hair care products that were both cruelty-free + vegan. It really was a no-brainer. We wanted to make it easy for customers to get the right products with no confusion about the ingredients or the testing process.
